Missoula man threatens people with knife near Clark Fork

On July 30, 2022, at approximately 6:30 p.m., Missoula Police Department officers were dispatched to the pedestrian bridge under the Madison Street Bridge. An officer spoke with the young adult victim and his friend. The victim said he and his friend were enjoying themselves on the river and bridge when they were approached by an individual later identified as 18-year-old Andrew Kaiser.

Without any provocation, Kaiser approached the victim and gave him a shoulder bump. The victim turned around, confused. Kaiser responded with escalating aggressive threats. The victim said he responded until Kaiser pulled out a knife and waved it at the victim, telling him “I’m going to kill you.”

Court documents say Kaiser then put the knife to his own throat and motioned to slit his throat while continuing to threaten to kill the victim. Kaiser eventually handed the knife over to one of his friends and a “fight” ensued between the victim, his friend, and Kaiser.

The victim and his friend then jumped off the bridge into the Clark Fork River and swam to shore. Kaiser went down to the river bank and continued to threaten the victim and his friend, asking their names and stating that he would “get someone to kill you”. Kaiser’s friend has not been located and the knife has not been recovered. Lydia Arnold, Police Public Information Officer, explains.

“Andrew Kaiser is under arrest for assault with a weapon after threatening a victim with a knife, vocalizing to the victim that he wanted to kill him and being physically impaired,” Arnold said. . “The incident occurred on the Madison catwalk. The victim had no relationship to Kaiser and several witnesses came forward to officers who responded, corroborating the victim’s statements. The victim was uninjured physically during the incident. This matter is still under investigation with the Missoula Police Department’s Detective Division.

A UMPD officer interviewed a group of witnesses who said they heard Kaiser tell the victim he was going to kill him and threaten him with a knife. They also said that when the “fight” finally happened, Kaiser threw the first punch.

An officer arrested Kaiser at the scene, without incident. Kaiser confirmed he no longer had the knife on him as he had given it to a friend. Kaiser also told the officer he felt “people watching and people judging and I’m sick of it.” Kaiser said the victim “puffed up his chest against me” and felt threatened, so he pulled out a knife. Kaiser further explained that “I f*****g beat his a**, because he f*****g came on me, that’s what f*****g s ‘has passed.”

Kaiser is currently charged with assault with a weapon and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
