Missoula man cuts off woman’s ear near Clark Fork camp


On July 16, 2022, at approximately 9:22 p.m., Missoula Police Department officers responded to the Parkside Condos area on Cooper Street for a reported disturbance. The reporting party said they heard a man and a woman arguing somewhere between the condos and the nearby Clark Fork River.

The reporting party said they heard the woman asking for help and asking that the police be called because the man was threatening her with a knife. Lydia Arnold, Police Public Information Officer, explains.

“Jason Coffee is currently in custody for assault with a weapon after a member of the community called 911 after hearing a call for help from a woman and said knives were involved,” Arnold said. “The incident occurred on the local trail system in Missoula.”

On July 15, 2022, Coffee allegedly stole a backpack from the woman that contained alcohol and other items. The next day, the woman went to Coffee’s camp and attempted to retrieve her belongings.

“During the police preliminary investigation, officers learned that the victim reported that Coffee stole her personal effects several days ago,” Arnold said. “When the victim attempted to retrieve her belongings, Coffee threatened her with a knife. The victim suffered a small laceration. Currently, this case is still under investigation with the Missoula Police Department Detective Division.

According to court documents, the victim attempted to take alcohol from her, but during the attempt Coffee struck the victim with his knives and cut off her right ear and part of the dress she was wearing. . Coffee claimed he armed himself with his knives only out of self-defense.

Coffee is currently charged with felony assault with a weapon, resisting arrest and obstructing a peace officer.
